Which Documentation Do I Need for a Wedding in Tuscany?

What documentation do you need before you can arrange your wedding in Tuscany? If you’ve always dreamed of getting married in Italy, the only barriers that should stand in your way should be where you’re going to host the big event and the specific details of the paperwork involved.

Of course, there are numerous different types of documents you will need to complete before arranging a marriage in Tuscany. These include notifying your local registry in the home country of your intention to marry in Italy and obtaining a Certificate of No Impediment to ensure that you are legally able to marry abroad. You may also need to make a statutory declaration.

It’s worth noting here that you will need your Certificate of No Impediment to be translated, too, by a professional and licensed translator so that the Italian courts can recognize it legally. Fortunately, this isn’t the case for statutory declarations, as these are provided in multiple languages as standard already (and it’s always nice to have one less thing to think about!)

Understanding all of these different paperwork requirements can understandably seem like a chore, and as one of the leading local destination wedding planners in Tuscany, this is something I understand better than most. But don’t let it put you off; completing this paperwork is a breeze when you’ve got support, and you’ll soon be on your way to enjoy a memorable destination wedding in Italy – and all of the beauty and magic that entails.

#1 You Cannot Stay in Italy Indefinitely – so, Plan Your Time Accordingly

Depending on your home country, you won’t be able to stay in Italy indefinitely; along the same lines, though, there are also minimum time requirements to reside in the country before you can get married.

For example, for most nationalities, you will need to stay in Italy for around 2/3 days, without residency requirements; however, for some other countries, you may need to stay in Italy for ten days before the marriage can take place. This is something that many couples don’t realize initially, but it’s well worth considering before your big day to ensure things go smoothly.

#2 You Must Be Single

In order to get married in Italy, you must be legally single, divorced, or widowed in order to marry in Italy. For a divorcee, if your last divorce was within 300 days of the wedding day, you may also need to provide medical proof of non-pregnancy before you can get married in Italy. However, this can be a lengthy and frustrating process; so, if this is the case for your wedding, it may be a lot easier to push the wedding back until this duration has passed.

#3 Gay Couples Can Now Apply for a Civil Marriage in Italy

It wasn’t always the case, but since May 2016, it is now legal for gay couples to apply for a civil union in Italy. The documentation requirements for same-sex couples are currently the same as for different sex couples, and you will need to meet the town hall officer a month or more before the wedding to make arrangements.

#4 Language Barriers

Unfortunately, it’s not uncommon for language barriers to make your wedding in Italy a little more tricky. With this in mind, I highly recommend that you get help from a professional and experienced wedding planner in Italy who is fluent in your language, as this will help simplify the process and ease out the burdens of language barriers.
